How To ~ Faux "Wood" Kitchen Table Top

Check out how I made my white table top look like this!
It's not perfect, and it's just a faux finish, but now I have the "look" of wood.

I bought this table for $15.00 at a thrift store.  It was scratched and the leaf had a name carved in it.  I tossed out that part and painted the rest of the table ivory.

Well, after a few years I decided I wanted a natural wood table and white chairs.  After looking around  for about 6 months...I decided to do the FAUX!

Here's how it started.

First I used a coat of Kilz.
I picked a satin paint color that was sort of a nutmeg/yellow/ gold for the base.  And let it dry.

And then my trusty "Aged Oak" gel stain.

I started brushing it on in very straight strokes.  I used enough on the brush to stroke from the center of each row and out to both edges.

When the whole table was covered...I started adding in the darker streaks.  I did this pretty light handed because the gel stain wants to start globbing up pretty fast.   I also tried to bring it down the sides to sort of follow the same grain.  On the ends of the table I went the same as the grain.

I would brush up the sides about 1 ft. down the table and then fill in the top, then brush up the side again.. and fill in the top again. Working my way along the table.

This is the shot where it looks like a brushed on "wood" top.  But in most lights, and times of day it just looks like a real wood table top.

My last step will be to use a paste wax or rub on clear coat to make it more durable.

Go ahead and try it.  Just do it when you won't have to stop or have any interuptions.
I did mine at midnight the other night  :)

I recently painted a whole batch of chairs in antique white, but have now thought they would look really good with wood seats. I think this would be a GREAT way to get the look, but with a lot less work! Thanks!

Kelly this looks great. I love the table with the dark top. Beautiful look. It sounds like you use gel stain a lot. What all do you use it for?

Thank you so much for posting this. I have a veneer topped table that I really don't like and I want to paint the chairs and legs cream/white and leave the top stained. I'm going to try this. Thanks!!!

Wonderful job. Thanks for making it look do-able.
I do prefer the natural look of wood over shabby white.

This is amazing! It looks beautiful. We really need to redo an old table that belonged to my husband's parents. I am tired of covering it up with a tablecloth, lol!

It would be so nice to have it shine beautifully like yours.

BTW, what did you mean in your comment about a "floating" floor? You said Candice Olson did it in the wet areas, and I'm not sure what you meant. Do you mean it looks wet because it shines so much?

Gosh! This is incredible! You have done a fantastic job! How in the world did you ever know to start with the base coat you did? I probably would have chosen brown then tried to work the colors the other way! I am in awe! I so wish I could win the sweeps to open a shop and sell stuff like yours! You are so talented! I love it!

Looks so real. I am not sure I would have known from the picture that it was not "real" wood. Great job!

Wow, You did good gf. Don't you just love to shop like that. I went last wed. I got a grain scoop that I am using as a candle holder and a old shoe form, but going back today for a oil painting I did not get. It cost more than I wanted to pay, so I had to think on it... I am thinking I want it! lol
