Victorian Bed ~ Before and After

For a how-to step by step on distressing furniture go see Kim at Savvy Southern Style. She did a piece in her foyer and it gorgeous!!  She has pictures of  the directions.  I didn't get any pics of mine.

HERE IS THE AFTER ~ I'll start out...My mother was an antique dealer back in the day when the Victorian look was very popular. Right around the very early 1980's. Also when the rustic country look was going mainstream.   Anyway, she bought this bed and used it in her room until she passed away in 1991.

The bed was passed down to me. This is just the FOOTBOARD!  You should have seen the headborard! It was tall and beautifully carved in the Victorian style.  It was stored for many years in an outdoor building.  All of the glue let go and all of the intricately carved pieces fell apart! Pieces were missing.  It was a  mess.   I finally had my husband donate last year.  Well... Saturday he pulls up with a load of stored furniture...and here was the  footboard!  I thought it was gone.  The glue was fine on this part, but there was a lot of missing moulding and trim.

All of this is the reason I painted it.  Might seem crazy, but it really is in bad condition.  Some might be horrified.  But at least now it will finally get some use as a headboard in our guest room.

I painted it white and loved it.  Then I distressed it, and loved it.  But I wanted it to have that very old, worn and chipped look, so I put a heavy glaze on it.  I'll show the room when it's finished!  Lots of ivory linen and antique furniture.

Here's  the BEFORE.   You can see some of the damage in the pictures below.

The  moulding is missing on almost all sides. The paint seems to hide it.

Some of the distressing.
Here's another close up of the distressing.
I'm so glad this piece is finally going to be used.
I'll hang it on the wall behind  the bed.  I plan to put it high enough to show as much detail as possible.

Thanks for stopping by.  Don't be mad that I painted it  :)

It's stunning Kelly, I like the after so much better. It's special when we get to have something like that stay in the family and put our spin on it. It was perfect for your mother like it was and now it suits you!

Hugs,
LeAnn:)

I think it looks fantastic, Kelly! I love it painted! Love the detail and can't wait to see how it turns out as a headboard in the room you're doing. I'm heading to a large thrift store in our area this weekend to see if I can't find a headboard to paint. The new ones are just too expensive for my blood and I just want a headboard; some of them come as a headboard/footboard set.

Simply breathtaking. You are truly a craftsWOMAN to every detail..for every piece. I am so fond of your ability to transform a piece into a new form of art to be treasured all over again.

Cheers~

Beautiful! I'm happy you painted it! I can just imagine how perfect it is going to look. Curious for your opinion on something - how do you feel about painted brick fireplaces? I want to paint our ugly brick, hubby does not. Curious to get some other opinions.

I'm not mad that you painted it. I think you gave this bed or what was left of it a new life. You did a fantastic job of it too. I used to be in the antique business too, but my emphasis was on painted furniture back when Shabby Chic was just becoming popular. I got alot of crap for painting wood! I can't wait to see the finished room with all the linens. I know it will be incredible. Hurry up! --Delores

Oh my godness, Kelly, this is so gorgous! I love it painted white. So you only have the footboard? I hope some lucky person found the headboard and did the same fabulous treatment. You are so inspiring! I have beds I wish I had the guts to paint white. Maybe I'll take the plunge one of the days!

Absolutely breathtaking! I too would have chosen to paint this piece. Some wouldn't agree..but it can always be stripped back to it's original state of grace once this new look grows old.

I'm so impressed with your talent for visualizing what a piece will look like once you've added your magic touch. It's a gift to see beyond the ordinary, and you've got what it takes!

I for one, sit on the edge of my computer seat, waiting for your next display. Blessings, joy and sunshine, Terri Smith from Dimples & Dragonflies.

I really, really love it. A rather amazing story about how that bed has certainly made the rounds. I'm glad that the footboard ended up with you because you have made it into something spectacular.

It's beautiful. I'm all for painting wood! If someone else doesn't like it, I figure they can strip it when I die. Ha!
